MTV was established in 1957 as the first commercial TV company in Finland. In the whole Europe it was third one – only English ITV and German RTL were older. MTV’s programs were shown on the state-owned channel YLE because of the legislation. MTV got its licence for the own channel not earlier than 1993. MTV wanted to start its own newscasts already in 1959, but the news releasing via TV was strictly preserved in hand of the state until 1980’s.
In 1998 MTV was merged with publishing house Aamulehti Ltd. The united company took name Alma Media Ltd, which is still active. However, the TV business was sold in 2005 to the Swedish consortium of Bonnier and Proventus. MTV is still in use as trademark, but in 100 % ownership of Bonnier AB.
