A beverage manufacturer Hartwall was established in 1836 by Mr. Victor Hartwall. He started the first mineral water factory in the Nordic countries in Helsinki. In the 1850’s the company mixed also juices and the breakthrough of the lemonades was seen during the First World War. Into brewery business Hartwall was expanded in 1966.
In the early 1990’s Hartwall formed Baltic Beverages Holding Ltd (BBH) with Swedish Pripps. That joint-stock company took soon a notable position in Eastern Europe.
In 2002 the business was sold to Scottish & Newcastle. The trademark Hartwall kept in use in Finland. Later, in 2008, Scottish & Newcastle was divided between Heineken and Carlsberg, and the former Hartwall was drifted to Heineken. Again, in 2013, Heineken sold the company to Royal Unibrew. Worth mentioning is, that meanwhile the family of Hartwall returned to beverage business and become shareholders of Royal Unibrew.
